We Are More Than Conquerors

"In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us."

Romans 8:37 (KJV)

This is one of my favorite statements in the Bible!

What a powerful statement! Each word has its own strength and weight behind it. It truly states that no one can defeat us! Doesn't that make you stand taller? It does me! Let's take a closer look...

If we want to know who and what we are conquerors of, we have to back up a bit to verse 31 where it says, "If God be for us, who can be against us?" First, let's talk about the WHO. Who is against us can seem numerous at times. They are the media, false religions, Satan, our enemies, and so on. Most of us are familiar with these. Now, let's talk about the ways they can be AGAINST US (the saints): vs.33 "Who shall lay anything to the charge of God's elect?"; vs 34 "Who is he that condemneth?"; vs 35 "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?"; and vs 36 "For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter." Being charged, condemned, separated, and killed are examples of what those "against us" can do. So, we are conquerors of evil and the acts they would take against us.

If we want to know how we come to be conquerors, we can look at verse 37 above, "we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us." We are conquerors because God loves us. Verse 33 also says, "It is God that justifieth." He handed down the verdict! Nothing will defeat us. Verses 38 and 39 sum it up, "For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." So, because of God's love for us - because Jesus conquered death and Satan on the cross - we never have to fear being separated from Him no matter what comes our way.

Now, you may have noticed it says "more." We are MORE than conquerors. What does the "more" mean? I believe the answer is in verses 28-30, "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose. For whom He did foreknow, He also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom He did predestinate, them He also called; and whom He called, them He also justified: and whom He justified, them He also glorified." So, we are more than conquerors... we are glorified - we have salvation - and it's a certainty for the faithful! By His grace, He has given us more... He has given us life!

It may not always be easy being a Christian, but we can rest assured that we have God on our side. We are conquerors because God loves us!
