Willing To Live Honestly

Updated: Feb 14, 2024

"Pray for us: for we trust we have a good conscience, in all things willing to live honestly." Hebrews 13:18 (KJV)

Recently, while sitting in the waiting room of a doctor's office, I had the pleasure of witnessing a sweet exchange between an elderly woman who had lost some money in her waiting room chair and the young boy who found it and sought her out to return it. Her thrilling exclamation of what an honest young man he was instantly lit up the boy's face... even more so when she handed him back one of the dollars for his good deed. It really was so adorable to watch their exchange!

While I watched that exchange I immediately thought to write a devotional about honesty. To me, honesty is among THE most beautiful gifts you can give to someone of yourself. The most harmful... dishonesty.

Have you ever been lied to or deceived by someone close to you... by someone you loved and who you thought loved you? How much did it hurt? What happened to your trust?

Lying and dishonesty (or deception) are called sins time and time again for a reason. They cause rifts and doubts. They ruin relationships and cause more harm than anything physical could because it is emotional and spiritual. It is of Satan. Honesty, on the other hand, is like balm to the soul... soothing and consoling. It is reassuring and effective and is something you can count on and respect. It is of God.

Living honestly starts with being taught honesty. This boy's mother was right there urging him to do the right thing, yet it was clear that he had learned it some time ago as his actions seemed instinctive in the moment. She was clearly a good example and was teaching him to follow in her steps. She wants a son that is respectful and respected, and full of integrity.

2 Corinthians 8:21 says, "Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men." Honesty between one another is extremely important. We are children of God, followers of Christ, and we must demonstrate that with truth and integrity. We must teach our children when they are young, as this mother did, and we must set our own example as citizens of this world that God has placed us in.

It is easier to live with ourselves when we know our consciences are clear because we have a spirit of love. Honesty is a gift of love. Let's share it with everyone!
